You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. John 15:16

Our Exceeding Great Reward

Abraham was called, Lot followed him. This would have been a success story for Lot, if he had followed without strife. By strife, Lot broke rank, and chose the plain of Jordan by sight. His choice turned out to be Sodom.  So Lot inherited the serpents and scorpions of Sodom and was bitten. Yet Abraham rescued him.

God rewarded Abraham with an "as far as your eyes can see" kind of blessing. After Lot had left, Abraham prospered with a renewed relationship with God. Then God revealed to Abraham in a vision saying "Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward." (Gen 15:1).

Abraham thought his blessings were fulfilled when he entered Canaan, the Promised Land. He thought he was fulfilled when he waxed great in silver and gold, cattle and servants. He thought the blessing was crowned with Isaac whom Sarah bore in old age. But He that called Abraham now said that the blessings alone are not enough, and declared Himself as Abraham's "exceeding great reward"!

Consider this reward that exceeds silver and gold in value! What is that blessing that is greater than Isaac and Jacob? What is the reward that exceeds the land of promise? What is that blessing that exceeds cattle on a thousand hills? The unsearchable riches… Christ in you the hope of glory! (Col 1:27)
